Materials processing and durability imply the coupling of multiphyisics phenomena, even multiphasic phenomena. This is the case of oxidation problems where chemical reaction, chemical diffusion, thermal diffusion combine. In laser processing, in addition to the previous multiphysical phenomena, solid, liquid or even gaseous phases coexist. The challenges today are to understand and master these multiphysics and multiphasic phenomena on real systems (process or part). Modeling and numerical simulation are of great interest to refine the understanding of coupled phenomena because they allow access to quantities often inaccessible experimentally. At the same time, the parameters of the models must be "easily" determined and the simulations must be sufficiently "fast" to be exploited, either for these desires of understanding or use for the sizing. This need is even more significant in an industrial setting. It is therefore necessary to develop an integrated approach where measures, models and calculations mutually enrich each other.

Specific features at PIMM

Today, each PIMM research group develops often one-dimensional models of coupled phenomena. Following the industrial demands indicated above, the four teams are confronted with the need to have the most representative multi-physics models possible of real phenomena while remaining rather "simple" (1) so that the parameters of these models are "easily" determined with targeted experiments and (2) so that the models can be extended to the three-dimensional case. These issues are shared by the whole PIMM laboratory and can take advantage of the Dysco research group expertise in 3D resolution of non linear multi-physics problems and with mobile boundaries and reduction of models.

 

Scientific issues
PIMM Lab addresses the following scientific questions:
• How to establish multiphysics models and compute 3D simulations required to address real components for industry?
• Can these models be relacted by Data Driven methods ? Can measures and calculations be directly linked?
